Gabion boxes are commonly available in heights of 0.5 m and 1 m, and come in double-twisted woven or welded wire mesh constructions.

Gabion box It is an engineering component made of metal wires woven or welded into a mesh structure and filled with stone materials. due to its four major characteristics of "permeability+strong flexibility+fast assembly+ecological friendliness",widely used in fields such as civil engineering, water conservancy protection, landscape design, etc.

Gabion boxes are often used as retaining walls in hydraulic engineering. A gabion retaining wall is constructed by stacking multiple gabion boxes. These structures are mainly applied on steep mountain slopes to control mudflows, prevent landslides, and protect the roadbeds of highways and railways.

Gabion box Material classification

  • Galvanized steel wire: The surface of the steel wire is protected by hot-dip galvanizing, and the thickness of the galvanized protective layer is made according to customer requirements, with a maximum galvanizing amount of 600g/㎡ or more.
  • Zinc 5% (10%) aluminum mixed rare earth alloy steel wire: (also known as Galvan) steel wire, its corrosion resistance is more than three times higher than traditional pure galvanized steel wire, its diameter can reach 2.0mm-4.0mm, and its tensile strength is 350-500N/mm ².
  • Galvanized steel wire wrapping: High quality low-carbon steel wire is wrapped with PVC or PE protective coating on the surface of the steel wire, and then woven into various specifications of stone cages. This protective layer will greatly improve corrosion resistance and have a longer service life.

Production process and Application

Gabion box can be used for both hydraulic engineering and decorative construction.

  • For residential or commercial decoration, garden flower pots, and indoor or outdoor design filled with stone, it is recommended to use welded gabion box. Due to the fact that the rigid structure does not deform when filled with stones, it can make the site particularly beautiful
  • To protect riverbanks or repair waterways, stabilize slopes and embankments, it is recommended to use Double twisted woven gabion box. The double twisted woven structure without welding points has high flexibility and can withstand mountain floods and impacts. It can also help with ecological restoration.

Specification and model

  • Mesh size
    • Double twisted gabion: 50 × 70 mm, 60 × 80 mm, 80 × 100 mm, 90 × 110 mm, 100 × 120 mm, etc.
    • Welded gabion: 50 × 50 mm, 60 × 60 mm, 50 × 80 mm, 50 × 100 mm, 100 × 100 mm, etc. 76.2 × 76.2 mm is the most popular.
  • Wire diameter
    • Double twisted gabion: 2.0–4.0 mm.
    • Welded gabion: 3.0–6.0 mm.
  • Difference
    • Welded gabion Using resistance welding technology, the structure has stronger rigidity and is suitable for impact resistant scenarios (such as river bottom protection).
    • Double twisted woven gabion Good flexibility but easy to deform, with a cost reduction of about 15% -20%.

Advantages

  • Flexible. Galvanized gabion mesh has a flexible structure, is not easy to break, and has excellent seismic performance.
  • Anti erosion. The filled stones can effectively disperse the impact of water flow and reduce soil erosion.
  • Natural drainage. The gaps between the stones allow water to freely penetrate, dissipate flowing water energy
  • Durability. Galvanized gabion box strong corrosion resistance, extending the service life in humid environments.
  • Eco friendly. The gaps can fill the soil, promote plant growth, restore the ecological environment, and meet the needs of ecological engineering.
  • Comparative advantages with other materials.
    • VS concrete structure: more permeable, eco-friendly, and flexible, avoiding rigid cracking.
    • Compared to ordinary masonry: faster construction, stronger overall integrity, and better displacement resistance.

Applications

  • Soil retaining and slope protection
    • Gravity retaining wall: It can be built vertically or slightly upwards, and can be made into a stepped or green surface to withstand soil pressure while allowing groundwater behind the wall to be freely discharged, significantly reducing water pressure。
    • Embankment/Mountain Slope Protection: Stacking box cages along the slope, using self weight and friction to stabilize the slope surface, can adapt to slight settlement of the foundation without cracking。
  • River and Coastal Protection
    • Bank slope protection, riverbed paving, spur dike, anti wave embankment, bridge pier corner protection, etc.: The gaps between the stones in the net cage can reduce the energy of water flow or waves, resist erosion, and can move as a whole with the deformation of the riverbed, avoiding the traditional concrete "one hit, one destroyed" problem。
    • Erosion control: Experiments have shown that using Gabin structure can reduce slope erosion rate by about 70%。
  • Water conservancy and flood control engineering
    • Temporary or permanent cofferdams, diversion embankments, culvert inlet and outlet aprons, flood diversion outlet energy dissipation sections, etc.: A permeable dam can be formed by quickly filling stones on site, and it can still be retained as a permanent revetment after a flood。

  • Transportation and Municipal Infrastructure
    • Road widening retaining walls, bridge piers, tunnel entrance protective walls, and railway sound barrier foundations: light weight, simple foundation treatment, and can be stacked up to more than ten meters high; Strong adaptability to soft foundation, reducing pile foundation costs。
    • Noise barrier: Fill the metal net cage with stones or recycled concrete, which has both sound absorption and landscape functions。
  • Military and Security Defense
    • Explosion proof walls, shooting shelters, and camp protection: The foldable "modular Gabion" can be quickly deployed and loaded after being airdropped to the front line to form an anti ballistic shield; It can also be used for explosion-proof collisions around important facilities。
  • Landscape and architectural elements
    • Garden flower beds, outdoor chairs, sculptures, landscape walls, villa courtyard partitions: The natural stone surface is rough and beautiful, and can be combined with green plants to form a "breathing ecological wall", while reducing material and construction costs。
    • Architectural facade or interior decoration: filled with colored glass, recycled bricks, etc., transforming "engineering materials" into "design materials".

📧 Summary: The core value of Gabion Box lies in "local materials, fast assembly, good flexibility, and permeable ecology". Almost all scenarios that require the five functions of "retaining soil, anti erosion, energy dissipation, protection, and landscape" can consider using the gabion net cage scheme.
